Slomatics from Belfast are a slow heavy sounding band and an old client for whom I have designed several record covers. Domkraft from Sweden are their friends and occasional collaborators. I needed to make a record sleeve that worked with both of their aesthetics comfortably. This very large image hand drawn in pencil in three colours and scanned was the result, along with the accompanying inner sleeve and vinyl label illustrations. The title was the concept. Ideas of transformative journey, heights and depths. I had recently seen a documentary on the catacombs and magma chambers under the bay of Naples and read Robert MacFarlane’s ‘Underland’. Ideas of Katabasis, Anabasis and Nekyia came to mind and the ideas of buried lost knowledge, things hidden and obscured in the earth. So I made a map. inside illustrations showed abstract spiritual journeys.
